2023.06.16: Added several new children songs and lullabies.
2023.06.13: Upgraded the songbook engraving software. Finger pictures include a dividing line between each hand and additional symbols where introduced for embellishments. Improved staff layout and slightly larger symbols for ease of reading. May reorder all the melodies alphabetically to make it easier to find by name. Some melodies have colored notes. To be color blind friendly, Red has been replaced with Copper.
2023.05.14: Added content to announce the FluteTree Foundation Gathering / Flute Workshop, support for electronic billing for the event.
2023.04.01: Happy Beltane Day! With aspirations for FluteTree to carry forward another 22 years, finished migrating to new web hosting service which includes email accounts. Improved the songbook by providing a couple of buttons to simplify switching back to the common 6-hole and 5-hole fingering. Also continuing efforts to expand our support for new alternate fingerings for 4 to 7 hole flutes.
2023.03.30: The routine revision of links to flute makers and events. Flute events are now returning, and we are catching up on the where and whens. If you have any to share, let us know.
2022: A big thank you to everyone who participated in our survey/questionaire. It has help inform us on how we can better help the community, what kind of workshop/event we should sponsor.
Revised links to flute makers and events. Over the last couple of turbulent years, many have either retired or migrated to new platforms. The songbook had cosmetic changes, typos fixed and had one traditional melody added:
We are continue to welcome songbook suggests for additional public domain melodies. Unfortunately all the other songs we help folks TAB out in 2022 where copyrighted, so it was a slow year for new songs on the site.
2021.10.14: Improved the drawing of finger pictures to be easier to read, including rotating half-holes to be more noticable. All grace notes are annotated with finger pictures. And added one traditional melody:
2021.10.13: On this day in 1775, the Continental Congress established what became the United States Navy. In anticipation of US Veterans day which is about a month away, the songbook now includes service songs for each branch of the US Armed Forces.
Members of our flute community get requests to play these melodies in service and ceremony. Also many veterans have found a particular kind of peace thru the flute. There are a number of individuals that are involved with putting flutes in the hands of veterans. So with this in mind, we are honored to share these arrangements.
2021.09.25: Improved the ability to customize the finger pictures that appear on the sheet music. Extended the songbook engraving software to support Major Key flutes. Depending on the songbook, 3-hole to 7-hole flutes are now supported. Finger pictures for grace notes are now partially supported. Because Major Key flutes are supported, in the future it will be easier to add traditional melodies that were commonly played before Minor Key flutes became popular in the 1980s and teach some fingering conventions used by this earlier generation of players.
Melodies that have been recently added or have new variations...
Many of the other web repositories of Native American Flute songs have disappeared in the last few years. We sadly have retired our catalog of these songs and where you once could find them.
